01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Paper menu strips line the walls at Fukumotoya, pointing diners straight towards the staple combination of ramen and half fried rice. The bowl arrives with a clear chicken-bone soy broth carrying thin, curly noodles, garnished simply with bean sprouts and a slice of naruto fish cake—the very image of classic, unembellished chuka soba. Alongside it, the fried rice is tossed until the grains are aromatic and distinct, studded with colourful flecks of finely diced kamaboko. Taking a spoonful of savoury fried rice followed by a sip of the soy broth establishes the satisfying rhythm of a meal here.

Among the noodle dishes, the tanmen has a devoted following. A quick toss in the wok leaves the cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots, and pork piping hot with a lively crunch intact. The mild salt-broth base absorbs the natural sweetness of the stir-fried vegetables, wrapping around chewy, medium-thick noodles that develop deeper richness with each bite. Diners can also opt for the C set, which includes a half portion of rice and stir-fried vegetables, and swap the standard ramen for tanmen for an all-vegetable meal, spooning the sweet-savoury stir-fried vegetables right over the rice.

Those in the mood for a full set meal can rely on the ginger pork or classic stir-fried liver and garlic chives, each boldly seasoned to pair with bowls of white rice. The trays come without fanfare, accompanied by a small salad dolloped with mayonnaise, wakame miso soup, and pickles, evoking the comforting ease of home cooking. Thin-skinned gyoza dumplings and cold beer are also on hand, making it just as easy to add a small side dish to an evening bite on the way home from work.

Retro round stools and simple tables welcome solo diners without any fuss, drawing in neighbours and passers-by beneath the noren curtain throughout the day and evening. As payment is strictly cash only, it is best to arrive with coins or notes in pocket when stopping by this neighbourhood diner.
